The internet is great for many things, such as procrastinating and looking at pictures of attractive ladies. It is also a great place to show off creativity. A lot of people have taken to showing off their creative talent through the creation of “premake” trailers. These are trailers for well known movies, such as Star Wars, but using footage from older movies. Basically it takes the unique charm of movies made in the 30′s and 40′s and adds them to the films we already know and love. This is like the retro t-shirts everybody loves these days, but more complicated- more retro- and in many cases– far cooler. Here are the 10 best examples of well made premake trailers.
Disney’s Up! was a huge hit in theaters, telling the story of a crotchety old man using balloons to make his house fly to South America and accidentally kidnapping a little boy. YouTube user whoiseyevan decided the only thing that could make this movie better would be if it was set in the 1960′s. Seamlessly blending together scenes from over 20 movies, this Up! premake is hilarious and amazingly accurate to the actual movie. The best part of this trailer is definitely the line “You’re a pontificating old poop”, but there are many great moments in this premake to enjoy.
Alright, The Avengers hasn’t actually come out yet, but it is safe to say this premake will rival it in entertainment value. Once again, whoiseyevan takes scenes from every old superhero movie he can find to create a trailer featuring earth’s mightiest heroes in action. There’s Captain America jumping into action, Iron Man, Hawkeye, and all the other early Avengers. It was a nice touch to add the “Timely Atlas presents” scene, as Marvel comics was known as Timely Comics and Atlas Comics before becoming Marvel. It’s the little details like that that end up making these premakes all the more enjoyable.
3. The Empire Strikes Back
If it hasn’t become obvious yet, “whoiseyevan” is the premier creator of premake trailers. Adding in the scrolling text was a nice touch on the premake trailer, but the nerd knowledge of Star Wars shows through in the name of the main character. For those who don’t spend hours poring over DVD extras, Luke Starkiller was actually the original name for Luke Skywalker. Then George Lucas decided that having the main character being named Starkiller would be more awesome than the fragile minds of the eighties could handle, and went on to create one of the most popular franchises of all time with Skywalker instead.
This premake was made by, surprise, whoiseyevan, undisputed ruler of the internet. The ghosts and ghouls in this premake are what make it so fun to watch. Sure, there have been lots of technological advances since the days these scenes were taken from, but the monsters are still hilarious. It is hard to imagine any of them ever being scary, so it can safely be agreed upon that our forefathers were wimps. The ridiculous complexity of the numerous beakers and vials used to create the containment unit in this premake is quite entertaining as well.
5. Raiders of the Lost Ark
This is the last entry on this list from the mysterious whoiseyevan, but it lives up to the rest of his work. What is truly amazing about this premake is how closely it follows the actual Raders of the Lost Ark movie. There is a daring escape from angry natives in a seaplane. There are angry Nazis. There is a handsome archeologist seducing everything lacking a Y chromosome. This is Indiana Jones. There’s no other way to describe it. Even the trademark whip is in action. Whoiseyevan has taken premake trailers to an artform.
