Pumpkin carving goes back hundreds of years in Europe. Well, that’s not entirely correct. Turnip carving goes back hundreds of years in Europe. They could hollow out the inside and carve designs into it, calling them jack-o’-lanterns.
When these immigrants came to America they re-focused their skills upon the pumpkin. Now it’s Halloween tradition and pumpkins are carved in a variety of shapes, sizes and styles.
You could see everything from a celebrity to a videogame character carved into the side of a pumpkin. There are even world records associated with pumpkin carving from the most jack-o’-lanterns lit in one place (30,128) to the largest jack-o’-lantern ever carved (1,469 lbs.).
Just a head’s up though. The creepiness of the carver is directly proportional to the oddness of the jack-o’-lantern design. No matter how awesome they look, spending that much time carving out a vegetable you’re never gonna eat is just damned weird.
Unless it’s Yoda.
