Many people see the homeless as strange and frightening creatures to be avoided at all costs. We often fail to realize that they’re real people, down on their luck, who often suffer from illness or simply don’t fit into society’s cookie cutter rules about how ‘productive members of society’ should live their lives.
The only reason the homeless are discarded is that they’re broke as heck. Human life is valued at the individual’s net worth. No money, no one cares. Plenty of the rich and famous suffer from mental illness and/or addiction — but they’re considered erratic, worthy of sympathy, and ever so interesting.
