TSA Gone Wild (Infographic)

article written by:

With the recent decision by the TSA to impose privacy-invading security measures such as x-ray scanning and physical pat-downs, there has no doubt been a wave of resistance by the jet-setting public.

So what exactly has been going down? Why has the TSA taken such a highly controversial way to “keep people safe” while flying?

Let’s take a look at the infographic by the people at criminal justice degree:

While I do not at all agree with what the TSA is doing, this infographic is misleading.

Richard Skinner's quote on the efficacy of the TSA is from 2005, which in turn implies that what he says doesn't necessarily apply to the modern TSA and the things they have changed since that point in time.

Also inaccurate because the full body scanners are not mandatory… you can still request a pat-down.

Great, now the TSA can give me cancer, post my naked body on the internet for free, and have their low paid employees cop a feel on me and my family. That's exactly what I want a guy "agressively patting down" my child. We put people in prison for this act. It's assault plain and simple. Assault by definition is the unwanted touching from another person. Next time a TSA agent tries this I'll record it and have him arrested for assault, possibly sexual assault.

Truth, please try it and let us all know how it turns out. Pretty much how they've responded to Senators on this front indicates they would likely charge you with obstruction or some lame ass charge, and fine you $11,000, leaving the entire burden of defense or paying the fine on you. That there is no due process involved, and the fine is at TSA and DHS's sole discretion is your bonus for playing this game. Even if you fight it through the court system, you can bet that at the last minute TSA/DHS will drop the fine entirely rendering your lawsuit moot, and you stuck with a nice attorney's bill, because clearly TSA/DHS don't want to see any of their strong arm fear tactics on the American public scrutinized by the courts, the only place they might actually lose. See "Congressional Milquetoasts" who have completely lost any meaningful control of the TSA here.

One thing is certain, even if a TSA agent engaged in penetration of any part of their body into any part of yours, there is no chance local police would arrest a TSA agent for any reason, including assault, on your word alone. Maybe, just maybe, if there were video of you doing nothing at all for 30 minutes leading up to a TSA agent flat out assaulting you with a baton, luggage, or some other improvised weapon, would a local officer charge a TSA agent with assault. See Tal Shiar.

slight correction: you can bring breast milk past security to feed an accompanying infant. they will take you to analyze it off to the side, but it's not disallowed.
